Who's actually behind this

There's one person reading every application.

I started NeedAGuy because I got tired of the same New York problem: needing something done at a time when nothing is open, and having no idea who to call. Everyone here has a guy for something. Almost nobody has a guy for everything.

So I'm building the list. Slowly, and by hand. Every provider who applies is screened by me — I check the license, I confirm the insurance, I speak to the references. If someone shows up at your door at 2am, I want to have already decided I'd let them into my own apartment.

What "vetted" actually means here

It's a word everyone uses and almost nobody defines. Here is exactly what we check, and where.

  1. The license is real and current. We look up the number in the public register that issued it — the NYC Department of Buildings for electricians and plumbers, the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection for locksmiths, contractors and pest control, the New York State Department of State for notaries. You can run the same search yourself; we'll give you the number.
  2. The insurance is active. We confirm the policy with the carrier directly, not just the certificate.
  3. The references are called. Two of them, by a person, on the phone.
  4. We talk. A real conversation about their work, their availability, and how they handle a job going wrong. Plenty of applications end here.

What this is not: a guarantee. Verification is a point-in-time check, not a promise about how someone behaves in your home. We re-check credentials when they expire, and we remove people who stop meeting the bar. The full terms are here.
